Weather Defense® Sheathing Type X drywall
Weather Defense drywall is a moisture- and mold-resistant exterior wall sheathing designed to be covered by an exterior-finish cladding such as siding, brick, masonry veneer, or wire-lath stucco.
Weather Defense is specially formulated, noncombustible, moisture- and mold-resistant gypsum core is covered with a coated fiberglass mat on the board's front, back, and long edges. Weather Defense can be used in exterior insulation and finish systems (EIFS) when specified by the EIFS manufacturer, and as a substrate for air- and water-resistant barriers, including wraps, self-adhesive membranes, and liquid-applied coatings.
Weather Defense offers superior resistance to normal weather conditions and will, in most applications, provide protection from exposure to the elements for up to 12 months (subject to the terms, conditions, and exclusions of Continental's limited warranty). Use of a flexible sealant to fill all exposed cutouts and joints will afford additional protection when construction is delayed for an extended period.
Weather Defense is lightweight; scores, cuts, and fastens easily; and has specially coated facers to provide irritation-resistant handling. It is designed for use in applications that require direct mechanical attachment to wood or metal framing, or attachment to steel-stud curtain walls. Exterior cladding should be attached mechanically through the sheathing and directly to the framing.
Weather Defense is designed for exterior wall and soffit applications where resistance to normal weather conditions is desired. Applicable areas include:
- Exterior wall sheathing;
- Exterior soffits;
- Exterior ceilings, underhangs, and carports; and
- As a base for exterior cladding and EIFS.
Mold resistance: Weather Defense offers enhanced protection against the growth of mold and mildew on its surface and in its core.
Weather resistance: Weather Defense will, in most applications, provide protection from exposure to the elements for up to 12 months (subject to the terms, conditions, and exclusions of Continental's limited warranty).
Warranted performance: Weather Defense offers warranted performance for a period of five years when used as a substrate in architecturally specified EIFS. Please refer to Continental's limited warranty for more details.
Core: Noncombustible, dimensionally stable, inert gypsum specially formulated to resist mold and moisture.
Facers: Coated fiberglass; front and back are platinum colored.
Long edges: Square.
Recycled content: More than 90 percent by weight.
Emissions: Asbestos free.
MOLD AND MILDEW PROTECTION
Weather Defense offers enhanced protection against the growth of mold and mildew on its surface and in its core compared with paper-faced sheathing. Under controlled testing conditions, Weather Defense achieved an average panel score of 10 out of a possible 10, the highest level of performance for mold resistance using ASTM D 3273. As with any building material, avoiding exposure to water during handling, storage, and installation is the best way to avoid the formation of mold and mildew.
STANDARDS & CODES
Weather Defense is formulated to perform in accordance with ASTM C 1177.
Weather Defense is UL classified for surface burning (File No. R16102) (tested in accordance with ASTM E 84); flame spread = 10; smoke developed = 0.
Core combustibility (tested in conformance with ASTM E 136): noncombustible.
