CORPORATE & SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
MAKING A POSITIVE IMPACT
Key to Continental are its values of respect, care and constructive dialogue with stakeholders, including employees. These values are reflected in Continental's approach to its operations and business activities.
One of Continental’s core beliefs is the importance of giving back to the communities in which its employees live and work. Whether donating wallboard to local charities' building efforts or providing low-cost solar energy to residents near its Buchanan, NY plant, we strive to always live our BISON values: Bold, Inclusive, Steadfast, Open-minded and Nimble. We support efforts nationwide that enhance the prosperity of our country, neighbors and environment.
Standing Strong with Susan G. Komen
Continental proudly supports Susan G. Komen and its mission to invest in breakthrough research to prevent and cure breast cancer. In keeping with this mission, Continental has committed an annual financial donation to Komen. Additionally, a portion of all sales of our Bison Board Weather Defense® Exterior Sheathing and Shaftliner products will be donated quarterly to the organization. These products feature a new Weather Defense logo in pink, alongside the Susan G. Komen Running Ribbon logo.
The Return of the Bison
To celebrate its 125th anniversary in 2014, the Smithsonian's National Zoo brought back the animal that sparked the conservation movement in the United States: the American bison. Continental proudly sponsored this exhibit from 2014 to 2019. An estimated 30-60 million bison roamed the plains and forests of pre-Columbian North America, but by the end of the 19th century, their numbers had been reduced to an estimated 1,000. Their return from near extinction – with as many as 500,000 bison again roaming North America – represents one of the greatest feats achieved by the conservation movement. The National Zoo was formed to promote the bison and its protection, and it is now committed to making this new bison exhibit an engaging, attractive and relevant highlight for Zoo visitors.
Reducing Energy Consumption with ENERGY STAR
Continental partners with ENERGY STAR, the Environmental Protection Agency’s voluntary program that helps businesses combat climate change through increased energy efficiency. "Efficient use of energy is good for the environment and good for business,” says Jay Bachmann, President and Chief Executive Officer. “We’re proud to be partnering with ENERGY STAR to help promote sustainability."
Championing Wildlife Habitat Preservation
In an effort to conserve and create wildlife habitats at its sites across North America, Continental Building Products has teamed up with the Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC). Together with community groups and others, Continental is working to make its sites as wildlife-friendly as possible by protecting and enhancing habitats. WHC has certified a number of Continental sites as wildlife habitats in recognition of Continental’s accomplishments in this area.
As such, Continental’s facility in Silver Grove, Kentucky, proudly holds the position of the first North American drywall plant, and among the first of 53 sites, to receive the Certified Corporate Lands (CCL) honor awarded by the Wildlife Habitat Council.
Our values are reflected in our approach to our operations and business activities, which focus on sustainable growth by reconciling the challenges of economic development and environmental respect.
